Location Data

OSU facilitates students' academic and personal success through the gathering of relevant data. Individual offices and departments oversee initial data collection and storage, following applicable laws and policies. This information is not exhaustive but is meant to illustrate what is typical on campus. This section may be updated as needed without notification. If there is a term that you do not know, check our Data Dictionary.


  What Purpose Does the Data Serve
 
  • Provide functionality for OSU ID Card
    • Regulate access to restricted areas
    • Manage purchasing for Dining Services and University Bookstore
  • Identify patterns of student activity for campus-wide planning
  • Support operations and planning for university departments and student organizations
  • Assist FERPA-trained university staff with a legitimate educational interest in student communication; see Engagement Data for more information
  What Data Do We Collect
 
  • Building access
  • Meal Plan and Dining purchases
  • University Bookstore purchases
  • Device information and Wi-Fi router location for devices connected to university network
  • Check-ins: Colvin Recreation Center, student success offices, SUAB programs, etc.

  • Card readers

  Where We Share Data
 
  • Building access logs are restricted on a need-to-know basis
  • IRA Dashboards: anonymized, aggregated data is shared on the Events and Engagement dashboard
  • Slate: derived engagement scores are shown in Slate and include some information related to events and activities on campus
  • OSU privately and securely shares individual student data with select vendors in order to provide additional support for students through advanced analytics.
  When We Retire Your Data
 
  • Follow state retention guidelines and federal regulations to retain data 
  • Vendor retention practices vary, but may be limited by their contracts with OSU
